چکیده

So what are autapses good for? For many years, autapses in the brain had seemed like anatomical curiosities of unknown practical utility. Quite recently, however, experiments have begun to expose ways in which autapses might play subtle, but important, roles in brain function. One kind of experiment suggests that autaptic selfinhibition might act like a pendulum in a clock, maintaining the precision with which a neuron fires trains of action potentials and thereby paces other neuronal circuits. Other experiments have suggested that autapses may allow a unique kind of regional self-control. By targeting autapses to just one or two of its dendritic branches, a neuron may custom-control parts of itself.

Massive autaptic self-innervation of GABAergic neurons in cat visual cortex.

Autapses are transmitter release sites made by the axon of a neuron on its own dendrites. We determined the numbers and precise subcellular position of autapses on different spiny and smooth dendritic cell types using intracellular biocytin filling in slices of adult neocortex. Potential self-innervation was light microscopically assessed on 10 pyramidal cells, 7 spiny stellate cells, and 41 sm...

Frequency and dendritic distribution of autapses established by layer 5 pyramidal neurons in the developing rat neocortex: comparison with synaptic innervation of adjacent neurons of the same class.

Synaptic contacts formed by the axon of a neuron on its own dendrites are known as autapses. Autaptic contacts occur frequently in cultured neurons and have been considered to be aberrant structures. We examined the regular occurrence, dendritic distribution, and fine structure of autapses established on layer 5 pyramidal neurons in the developing rat neocortex. Whole-cell recordings were made ...

Distinctive quantal properties of neurotransmission at excitatory and inhibitory autapses revealed using variance-mean analysis.

Normal brain function depends on an interplay between glutamatergic and GABAergic synaptic transmission, yet questions remain about the biophysical differences between these two classes of synapse. By taking advantage of a simple culture system, we present here a detailed comparison of excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmission under identical conditions using the variance-mean (V-M) method of...

Synaptic Transmission: Functional Autapses in the Cortex

Autapses--synapses made by a neuron onto itself--have often been observed anatomically in vivo, but their purpose has remained uncertain. A recent paper describes functional autapses in the cerebral cortex and gives clues to their physiological role.

Isoproterenol facilitates GABAergic autapses in fast-spiking cells of rat insular cortex.

In the cerebral cortex, fast-spiking (FS) cells are the principal GABAergic interneurons and potently suppress neural activity in targeting neurons. Some FS neurons make synaptic contacts with themselves. Such synapses are called autapses and contribute to self-inhibition of FS neural activity. β-Adrenoceptors have a crucial role in regulating GABAergic synaptic inputs from FS cells to pyramida...
